Learning to Share

...kind of. I was on FB and read a friend's post about her little girl leaving goldfish crackers in her bed and I remembered something about Lily that I just had to record for the ages :)

When Lily was about 18 months old and we were teaching her not to play with our things (like the electronics on Mike's nightstand, or the earplugs/eye mask on my nightstand) we did what every parent probably does: we'd grab one of her toys and trade her for our "toy". It didn't take long before Lily caught on to this kind of bartering, "I'll give you *this* for *that*". I would go looking for something off of my desk and find it replaced with one of Lily's toys. Ha, it makes me laugh to think of. She learned that if she wanted to play with something of ours, she better trade us something of hers!

Now that she's older and we're trying to teach her to share with James, I see her doing a very similar thing. When James has something she wants, she goes and picks out the most bright, garish toy in the room and distracts him with it. Most of the time it works for her. What a smart little girl!

They Say It's Your Birthday!

My sweet James boy is one year old today! I can't believe how the time has flown. He's growing and learning so many things that I want to remember...

...art appreciation. James loves to create, whether it's with the Magna-doodle, paper and pencil, or watercolor paints at playgroup.

...expressing a preference for me :) Ha! Totally kidding there, but he is consistently saying "Mama".

...always on the move. James went from barely crawling at 11 months, to pushing cars around, standing, cruising, and now pushing a cart while walking. I didn't need to worry that he was slow to get a move on.

...hearty eater. Food is James' favorite! He is not picky at all about what he eats, as long as we keep it coming. Besides the normal baby fare of chunked up meats, fruits, and veggies, he has tried and loved sushi, pesto, curry, and the occasional wood chip from the playground. I was surprised that he didn't get super excited about his birthday cupcake today. Guess nothing can top the sweet taste of whatever's-on-the-bottom-of-Lily's-shoe.

Happy birthday, little buddy. You are such a welcome addition to our family, and we love you so much!

Ye'm

Lily has had a great month. The things that I want to remember about her now are...

...how polite she is. She says "Thank you", unprompted, after receiving a compliment. She's learning to say "Yes, ma'am", even if most of the time it sounds like "Ye'm". When you ask her how she's doing, she always responds "I'm feeling good". Today she was particularly thoughtful: I unexpectedly went to the doctor and had to take her and James with me. She was in the room for the exam and had questions about what the doctor did. I tried explaining very simply "I'm hurting and the doctor checked to make sure I'm ok". About 6 hours later, she came up to me and said "Mama, is your body feeling better now?" Melt my heart, little girl. And on that note...

...how sweet she is. We were in Walmart and the checker asked how old the kids are. Upon learning Lily is 2ish, she said "Oh kids are SO awful that age!" I jumped to Lily's defense, because in all honesty she doesn't throw tantrums and can usually be reasoned with. (I know I'm incredibly blessed with her, and don't expect it to last, or to rub off on any other children we have/may have LOL). The one thing she does when she's upset *which, of course I find adorable* is growl. Not like *RAWR*, but like a french-woman rolling her "r's", or Chewbacca voicing his disapproval. The best thing about this is she's taught James, and he now follows suit.

...how much she loves to play. She can spend all evening running around the backyard, begging to chase or be chased, playing in the sprinklers, hiding behind the shed, looking for bugs, and collecting rocks. I love spending time with her, and I'm trying to verbalize to her how much fun I have being her mama.

All Settled In

After what seems like FOREVER, we are finally in our new house! Our original offer stipulated us closing on April 29th, but the repairs that were required to satisfy our lender kept getting put off by a stubborn seller. After a 2nd opinion (which confirmed the need for a major structural repair), the seller agreed to hire workers on May 6th. Our broker was telling us that even if the seller started the repairs by the 9th, she couldn't ok anything until it was completed and signed off on by the Structural Engineer. Then the broker would need 24 hours to review paperwork, then the attorney's need 24 hours, and the title company would need 24 hours, leaving us HOMELESS for several days until closing could be scheduled. Our lease was up May 15th, and we were anticipating not closing until the 17th. PANIC is the only feeling that I felt during that week. By no small miracle, the work was completed and approved in one day, our broker pushed her hardest and got everything off to the title company in 36 hours, and we were able to close on May 12th! We moved everything in one day and are SO happy to be *HOME*. I am so greatful for a loving Heavenly Father who surely helped move things along so that I didn't have a nervous breakdown.

We've become well acquainted with the local wildlife:

That is "Baby Alligator", as Lily has named it. That's Mike's drill battery charging up. Every night, BA curls up around the battery for warmth (or companionship, considering it's 82 degree's now at 2 in the morning), and every morning he takes off under the work bench. He's a good little bug eater. We also have a "Porch Frog" that hides under our bushes out front. He's a little too fast for pictures - but one of these days I'll get him!
